90 min. documentary about Anna María, a mother of three, and her journey through Iceland, finding out more about organic farming or lack there of. She learns why organic farming is so important for both people and the environment.
“In the documentary “Spring Awakens” we journey alongside Anna María, an accomplished musician and devoted mother of three, whose world takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Jesper, a son of Danish farmers with an organic upbringing. Together, Anna and Jesper relocate to Iceland with their children, only to discover a stark disparity in the availability of organic products compared to Denmark.”

Intrigued by this disparity, Anna embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery behind Iceland's limited emphasis on organic farming. She learns that only a mere 1% of Icelandic farmers practice organic methods, a startling contrast to the ambitions of other European Union nations aiming for 25% organic farming by 2030. As Anna delves deeper into the subject, she questions the plausibility of feeding the world solely with organic produce.
Anna's background as a vocal improvisation musician lends her a unique perspective, blending her artistic sensibilities with the investigation of organic farming. As the film unfolds, the surprising connections between vocal improvisation and organic farming gradually come to light.
Guided by the inspiration of Jesper's parents, Britta and Søren, Anna embarks on a journey across Iceland to meet organic farmers. Through encounters with passionate individuals like Kristján and Dóra, who employ ancient techniques like biochar to enhance soil health, and Eymundur, who develops innovative natural insect repellents, Anna uncovers the profound dedication of organic farmers and their commitment to nurturing the earth.
In a pivotal moment, Anna's exploration leads her to experts like Philippe, a Harvard professor in environmental medicine, and max van der sleen, a political economist and board member of M.O.B. (mobilisation for the environment). Their insights shed light on the importance of solid environmental practices, organic certification standards, elucidating the substances that are prohibited in organic farming and organic food products and what kind of pressure should or could be put on a government in the fight against climate change.
Driven by her newfound knowledge and passion, Anna joins forces with others to establish Iceland's first Organic Day. Through this event, a significant milestone is accomplished: the commitment from the Minister of Agriculture to draft Iceland's first organic policy, marking a historic turning point for the nation's agricultural landscape.
“GRÓA” or in english “SPRING AWAKENS” is a thought-provoking exploration that interweaves the realms of music, sustainability, and the human spirit. Through Anna's journey, the film inspires us all to listen to the collective voices advocating for a harmonious relationship with our planet and to consider the vital role each of us plays in cultivating a more organic and balanced world.
